Causes of hair loss and treatment options for younger patients

There are currently 50 million men and women affected by some type of hair loss in the United States. There are many conditions that cause hair loss, some with physical changes and others without. Some less common causes of hair loss, reversible with treatment, including thyroid disease, surgery, "crash diets", stress, and iron deficiency. There are also causes that may result in permanent hair loss which includes: lichen planopilaris, alopecia areata, and lupus. For patients younger than 23 who are suffering from hair loss, hair transplantation is not an option. Not all cases of hair loss are permanent, so at younger ages, it's best to not jump to conclusions. For younger patients, it's best to start with medical hair loss treatment before surgical treatment. With medical treatment, you can decrease future hair loss and possibly even get your hair back.
